Seismic measurements

Anglais

Seismic monitoring is crucial for the CERN complex of accelerators and experiments. The vibration issues are to become even more important with HL-LHC and FCC projects, in which a higher luminosity requests a smaller beam size and a higher vibration stability of the structures.
One of the flagship projects of the Mechanical Measurements Laboratory is the deployment and operation of CERN seismic network. The CERN seismic network is mandatory for several reasons:
- A full continuous LHC monitoring, to link beam instability with ground motion or seismic effects ;
- In the HL-LHC framework, to monitor our installation to anticipate some risks on the beam stability generated by civil engineering activities.
- Evaluate effects of the micro-seismicity induced by the geo-thermal exploitation on CERN accelerators (collabration with SIG)
